The 1987 Porsche 959 is one of the most interesting hidden cars in Forza Horizon 6 because it already starts with a strong foundation. Once you unlock it from the Treasure Car location behind the shops in Narai-Juku, the real fun begins. The car comes with AWD, twin turbos, and surprisingly balanced handling for an older supercar, which makes it easy to build for different types of racing.
What makes the 959 special is that it does not need extreme modifications to become competitive. A few smart upgrades completely change how the car feels on the road or dirt.
Decide What Type of Build You Want
Before spending credits, it helps to decide how you actually want to drive the car. The Porsche 959 works best in two main roles.
The first is a dirt or rally setup in A or S1 Class. This build takes advantage of the car’s Group B rally roots. AWD traction combined with rally suspension makes it incredibly stable on loose surfaces.
The second option is an S1 road racing build. In this form, the 959 becomes a fast all-weather grip machine that feels planted at high speed and handles wet roads better than many modern supercars.
Both routes work well, so the choice mostly depends on whether you spend more time racing on dirt or asphalt.
Keep the AWD System
One mistake many players make is converting the car to rear-wheel drive. The 959 already has one of the best AWD systems in the game, and removing it usually hurts launch performance and overall stability.
For most builds, keeping the factory drivetrain is the best decision. The AWD setup gives the car strong acceleration out of corners and makes it much easier to control during high-speed races.
Choose the Right Engine Setup
The stock twin-turbo flat-6 is still excellent. It has smooth power delivery, good turbo response, and keeps the original character of the car intact. For players who enjoy classic Porsche handling, staying stock is completely viable.
If you want to push the car harder in S1 class, an engine swap can unlock much higher performance. The 4.6L V8 Hybrid swap is one of the strongest options if it appears in your upgrade list. It gives the car massive acceleration and better top-end speed without completely ruining balance.
Still, many players prefer the original engine because it feels more authentic and already performs well enough for most events.
Prioritize Weight Reduction
The Porsche 959 is heavier than it looks, so weight reduction makes a huge difference immediately.
Installing Race Weight Reduction transforms the handling. The car becomes more responsive during direction changes and feels less sluggish when entering corners. Even Sport Weight Reduction is worth buying if you are trying to stay within a lower PI class.
This is usually one of the highest-value upgrades you can install on the car.
Upgrade the Suspension Properly
Your suspension choice should match your build type.
For dirt racing, Rally Springs and Dampers are the clear choice. They improve suspension travel, stability over bumps, and grip on uneven surfaces.
For road racing, Race Springs and Dampers work much better. They lower body roll and make the car feel sharper during fast cornering.
The 959 responds especially well to suspension tuning because its AWD system already provides solid traction. Once the chassis is stabilized, the car becomes extremely predictable.
Install Race Anti-Roll Bars
Front and rear Race Anti-Roll Bars are important because they unlock full tuning control.
After installing them, you can fine-tune the balance between understeer and oversteer. The stock car tends to push slightly wide in tighter corners, but proper anti-roll bar tuning helps the car rotate more naturally.
This becomes especially useful in S1 class road racing where corner speed matters more than raw horsepower.
Pick Tires Based on the Surface
Tires completely change how the Porsche 959 behaves.
For dirt builds, Offroad Race Tires are the best option. They improve grip dramatically on gravel and mud while keeping the AWD system effective.
For road racing, Semi-Slick or Slick Tires provide the best grip on asphalt. Semi-slicks are usually easier to balance if you want a mixed-use build, while slicks maximize dry-road performance.
The car already has strong traction, so upgrading tires makes the handling feel much more precise.
Upgrade the Transmission and Drivetrain
The stock gearbox works fine early on, but a Race Transmission gives you full gearing control, which is essential for competitive builds.
A 6-speed or 7-speed race gearbox lets you customize acceleration and top speed depending on the track.
Adding a Race Clutch and Race Driveline also improves responsiveness. Shifts become quicker, acceleration feels smoother, and the car reacts faster when exiting corners.
These upgrades may not sound exciting, but together they make the car feel much more refined.
Fine-Tune the Differential
Differential tuning is one of the biggest performance upgrades that many players ignore.
For dirt racing, increasing rear acceleration lock to around 70–80% helps the car rotate through corners while still maintaining traction. An Offroad Differential also improves stability on loose surfaces.
For road racing, slightly lower lock settings usually feel smoother and reduce aggressive oversteer during corner exits.
Because the 959 uses AWD, differential tuning has a huge impact on how the car distributes power.
Lower Tire Pressure for Dirt Builds
If you are building the car for rally events, lowering tire pressure slightly improves grip.
A range around 1.1 to 1.3 bar, or roughly 16 to 19 PSI, works well for dirt setups. The larger contact patch helps the car maintain traction on rough terrain and improves cornering consistency.
For road racing, slightly higher pressures usually produce better responsiveness.
Adjust the Final Drive Ratio
Once all upgrades are installed, the final step is gearing.
Adjust the Final Drive slider so the car reaches maximum RPM near the end of the final gear at top speed. This ensures you are using the engine’s full power range efficiently.
Shorter gearing improves acceleration for technical tracks, while longer gearing works better for highway races and speed events.
The Porsche 959 is fast enough that even small gearing adjustments can noticeably change performance.
