A glitch in one of FIFA 23’s”Hero packs” turned rather costly after a tradeable FIFA Ultimate Team Hero item was added to the virtual transfer market of the game with a price that was drastically reduced. Unrest ensued as players sought to sell their possessions after their value plummeted trying to recover losses when the market became saturated.
FUT Hero items are rare and are therefore highly valuable. Each one is associated with a player who has made a major contribution to the club or is a fan favourite for any reason. Hero items are available for purchase. Hero item can fetch million of FUT coins for each one on the virtual transfer market or can be acquired by purchasing packs. However, there is a low chance of obtaining one.
Therefore, when EA wrongly launched a pack which contained a tradeable Hero item for the low-low price of 250 FUT coins, the market was hit by an abundance of low-cost Heroes and caused the price to fall and wipe out the supposed value of most valuable items. Collectors of rare Heroes started selling them when they noticed prices dropping, which served to throw more fuel into the fire. This is understandable due to the fact that some rare Hero items are worth hundreds of dollars in real-world value when sold on third-party platforms.
The mistake has been corrected and the pack was made being available for about 25 minutes but the damage had been done. EA has not yet made a comment on the issue, and although the market is beginning to recover, the loss seems to be irreparable, and it remains to be seen what EA can accomplish to remedy the situation.
