Capitals re-sign Mike Green for three seasons 18.25 million

The team announced the signing on Monday.The structure of the contract will see Green earning $6 million in the first two seasons of the new deal and then Carmelo Anthony Jersey $6.25 million in 2014-15, the final season of the contract.”We are pleased to re-sign Mike Green to a new contract,” general manager George McPhee said in the team’s release. “Mike is one of the best young defensemen in the National Hockey League and is just entering his prime. He will continue to be a key part of our team moving forward.”At least for the next three years, that much is certain.This news comes just a day after it was released that Green had turned down the Capitals’ qualifying offer which would have been for one season. It’s pretty easy to see why now as he earned a longer extension and more money than he would have otherwise. But I’d be remi s if I Torrey Craig Jersey didn’t mention the risk the Capitals are taking with this contract. A pretty big one at that. Sure, when Green is able to play he is one of the more valuable defensemen in hockey. He can score, is very effective on the Markus Howard Jersey power play and had been seeing his game improve on the defensive end. The operative phrase in there, though, is “able to play” because Green has been one of those players saddled with the label of injury prone.Just one in his seven years at the NHL level (2007-08) has Green played a full 82 games. The injury bugs have really hit him hard in the last two seasons when he played a combined 81 games — just 32 of them last season. Making it a little more worrisome is the fact that it hasn’t been one injury but many different injuries. He has had concu sion i sues, groin i sues, knee i sues … something always seems to sneak up.Green is a part of the Caps Core Four that was tearing up the league a few years ago. This extension ensure the Caps will be keeping three of the four around for a few more years but the fourth, Alexander Semin, is on his way out the door, whenever he signs a contract with a new team. Left behind are Green, and Jerami Grant Jersey . With all that said, though, the numbers give you a pretty good idea why Green is still worth a cap hit of more than $6 million per season — a steep price tag. In 2008-09 and 2009-10 Green posted offensive numbers that would have challenged Erik Karl son this year He had an amazingly absurd 31 goals in 08-09 — in just 68 games, mind you — and then followed it with 76 points (57 a sists) in 75 games in 09-10. If he can find just 3/4 of that form again then on the current market for defensemen it is a pretty fair deal.However if he can’t stay healthy the Caps are going to have a big, unproductive hit on the cap. Fortunately for them it’s not Michael Porter Jersey a real burdensome length. In that regard it makes the deal look a lot better for Washington, it’s the safe-guard.Maybe now Green can afford to get himself a new vehicle.
