I had the same confusion when I bought my first Mac a couple of years ago. What really helped me was checking Apple’s Mac page at https://www.apple.com/mac/ compare specs and figure out what would suit my needs. In the end, I went with a MacBook Air because it’s lightweight for carrying around campus, but still powerful enough for design projects and casual gaming. From my experience, the battery life alone made it worth it, and I was surprised how smoothly it handled heavier apps.
