My doctor told me last week that therapy might help with my chronic pain since stress makes it worse. Honestly didn’t see that coming and I’m pretty confused. I always thought therapists were for mental health stuff only. What would they even do for something physical like pain? Do they teach techniques or is it talking about feelings? Never been to one before and feeling kinda clueless about the whole thing, any insight would be awesome.

My sister deals with fibromyalgia and her pain management doctor sent her to therapy too, which seemed weird at first. Turns out they work on the mind-body connection because stress and anxiety physically tighten muscles and amplify pain signals. A therapist can teach you coping strategies, relaxation techniques, and help process the emotional toll of chronic pain. Sometimes a psychologist is better for this because they’re trained in behavioral interventions and pain psychology. Check when to see a therapist to understand who does what. My sister sees a health psychologist now and it’s helped her manage flare-ups way better. It’s not just talking about feelings, it’s practical stuff.
