We adopted our son three years ago when he was 6 and lately some trauma stuff is surfacing that’s beyond what his regular therapist can handle. She’s been great but admitted a child psychiatrist would be better equipped for what he’s dealing with. He has nightmares constantly and some behavioral issues at school that seem tied to his early childhood experiences. Would appreciate any suggestions for finding someone who specializes in helping kids process trauma.

Oh, I completely get where you’re coming from. We adopted our daughter four years ago when she was 5, and around her seventh birthday, some really intense stuff from her early years started surfacing—night terrors, meltdowns at school, sudden fear of things that seemed harmless. Our therapist was amazing, but eventually even she said a child psychiatrist with trauma experience would be best. It made a world of difference to find someone who could really dive into the root causes, not just the symptoms. One resource we found helpful is this child mental health specialist Orange County . They specialize in kids dealing with trauma, and it felt like finally having someone speak the same language our child was using. Hang in there—you’re doing everything right by noticing and acting early.
